4) Do nuclear weapons and nuclear power play any role in achieving peace in the world?
Nuclear weapons and nuclear power are inseparable; both possess potential risks that threaten the dignity of life. The dropping of the a-bombs established technological development as the [prime indicator of world power, which further degrades human’s sense of humanity. Mr. Keisaburo from one of the NGOs we visited said that peace built by the possession of nuclear weapons is like “a castle built on sand.” He emphasized that the idea of nuclear deterrence is impossible, and nuclear weapons do not help achieve peace in any way. To conclude, dialogue is the key to achieve peace. In order to do so, countries need to put down their weapons and work towards abolishing nuclear weapons and nuclear power. Otherwise, as a hibakusha stated, every single person in this world will potentially become a hibakusha.
